In this workshop led by Lucy Berridge, you'll be taught how to use modern calligraphy to create cards, gift tags or place names for your table.
Lucy has always loved handwriting and all things stationery, so discovering the new version of what we now call 'Modern Calligraphy' means that the basic rules of copperplate calligraphy can be transferred onto a more relaxed and contemporary use of beautiful handwriting that is no longer exclusive to a select few. It can be learnt, practised and enjoyed by anyone.
Designed for complete beginners, or those wanting to refresh their skills, this delightful experience of gentle focused learning in a beautiful setting will certainly ensure an enjoyable day. It’s not about perfection, it’s about beginning with a very relaxed approach.
THE DAY
In the morning, you will start by learning about penholders, nibs, inks and paper types and begin by practising basis nib strokes which will lead to letter formation and move on to joined-up words.
After lunch, you'll work on writing names, words and phrases, which will allow you to use your newly acquired skills and give you simple ideas to put into everyday practice.
Lucy will also demonstrate the use of white and gold inks on coloured papers which is an exciting way to see your work transform.
All materials supplied and included for take-home use: penholder, nib, black ink, worksheets and practice papers (white and gold ink not included but practice pots available on the day.)
During the day tea and coffee will be provided and at lunchtime, a simple light meal in the restaurant is included.
Please bring your own apron, and also note, that calligraphy ink doesn’t wash out of all fabrics, so please don’t wear your favourite clothes!
